Salmon Fishing on the Tweed

We travelled down to the Royal Burgh of Lauder in Berwickshire to fulfil my husband Donalds dream of 'proper' Salmon fishing, a treat for his 40th birthday. The campsite at Thirlestane Castle had a beautiful outlook over the countryside and was not too far from our 'beat' for the next mornings fishing.

Arriving at Ladybank the next morning to glorious sunshine, needless to say I was delighted, but doubts were already being cast as supposedly fish come to the surface on the duller days. The himalayan balsam was in full bloom, vast seas of pretty pink flowers waving in the wind.

Mathias our gillie was superb, giving Donald lots of tips with his fly fishing. Within an hour the other guy that was out with us, (his name escapes me) had a big salmon on the line! Later I was informed this was called a 'take' not a 'bite' as the adult salmon don't eat when they come up river. The fish won on this occasion, but it was a close one.

Donald had a huge salmon that kept jumping out of the water close by, haunting him and was as close as he got to a 'take'. As they say 'there is always next time'.
